The UN recognized government in Libya wants the intergovernmental body to reign in on foreign powers that it accuses of fuelling the civil conflict in the North African country.
The accusations first came last month when the President of the Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord of the State of Libya, Fayez Mustafa Serraj, told the 74th Session of the General Assembly of the UN in New York that the conflict in Libya is facilitated by some negative foreign forces that he did not name.
“Libya is experiencing exceptional circumstance and a very serious crisis due to the negative foreign interference that caused political and institutional division and further exacerbation of the crisis leading to a military aggression with foreign financing and support,” Serraj said.
His address to the UN came five months after forces loyal to Gen. Khalifa Haftar launched attacks on the capital, Tripoli as the UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited the country.
The attack dented efforts at peace as it came days to an all-inclusive national conference to find a peaceful political solution to the Libyan crisis.
According to Serraj, Haftar is encouraged to carry out the attacks by the support he received from certain states for years in flagrant violations of Security Council resolutions on the arms ban.
