Security operatives have arrested several agents and leaders of the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kyenjojo District ahead of party presidential campaigns in the area.
According to reports, the opposition leaders were arrested in a night raid on AMAC Suites Hotel where the NUP politicians were booked ahead of the campaign meetings on Monday.
NUP’s presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, is scheduled to campaign in the area following the resumption of his campaigns after last week’s debacle when he was arrested and arraigned before court for flouting COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
According to NUP leaders, the politicians were dragged out of their hotel rooms on Sunday night.
“This morning we’re scheduled to be in Kyegegwa district. The police arrested many of our team members throughout the night. This morning, they have cancelled the venue which we booked to address our people from & are asking us to look for another venue!” Kyagulanyi tweeted on Monday.
Some of the NUP supporters who were arrested include, Mr Warren Akandonda, Mr Jacob Mwesigwa, Mr Abbey Mutebi and a one Hassan.
“It is true… and we are trying to find out where they could have been taken. We don’t know why they were arrested. Someone on working out on it and see how we can proceed,” NUP Lawyer Anthony Wameli confirmed the arrests.
Wameli said the arrested are about six including NUP campaign agents, leaders in the area and supporters.
However, Kyegegwa District Police Commander, Ms Jessica Naawe refuted the claim of arrests saying that no NUP politician or supporter was arrested on Sunday.
“I don’t have anybody in cells who belongs to NUP. That’s what I can tell you,” Ms Naawe said on phone interview.
