Namugongo: Police foils attack by suspected criminals, recovers 8 sharpened pangas

Police says their personel last night foiled an attack by suspected panga-weilding thugs in Namugongo areas recovering eight sharpened pangas, six pit axes and five spanas.

The operation and consequent recovery of weapons by police followed a tip off on March 7th, 2023 about a group of armed thugs in Gayaza Trading Centre, Gayaza Ward, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District.

According to police statement issued today, a team officers conducted surveillance in the area, and at 2230/c, officers from Kasangati Police Station carried out an operation and arrested five suspects.

The suspects were identified as Kawoya Charles (male juvenile, 17), Sekubuge Akiram (male adult, 23), Mwesigwa Enock (male adult, 32), Sagara Denis (male adult, 27), and Mwanja Ivan (male adult, 31). Nekesa Rachael, the female adult (29) and wife of Richard Mwesigwe.

Alongside the pangas, police also recovered two motorcycles (UEF 094E Yamaha red in colour, UEK 221S Bajaj boxer red in colour), and a box containing nails. “It was discovered that the criminals had planned to attack the Namugongo areas.” The statement posted on Uganda Police socials notes.

The suspected commander of this gang is still at large according to the police statement.

The statement notes that further investigations are ongoing, including a search of the suspects’ homes and efforts to trace those still at large. The police urge the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
