KAMPALA, UGANDA – May 16, 2025 – The Electoral Commission of Uganda has announced the conclusion of the nationwide display of the National Voters’ Register, which ran from April 25th to May 15th, 2025, in most polling stations. However, an extension until May 20th has been granted for 620 polling stations that experienced initial technical delays.
The Commission also confirmed the completion of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) voters’ register display, which targeted youths, persons with disabilities (PWD), and older persons, and ran from April 25th to May 8th.
“There shall be no extension of the Display exercise,” stated Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. “The purpose of this exercise was to ensure the accuracy of voter details and allow for objections to inclusions or removals.”
During the display, citizens were encouraged to scrutinize the register and report deceased individuals, underage voters, those registered in incorrect parishes, and duplicate entries.
Following the display, the Electoral Commission will now commence the display of lists of individuals recommended for removal or inclusion in the National Voters’ Register. This phase, running from May 16th to May 26th, 2025, will take place at each respective Parish/Ward Headquarter.
“The purpose of this exercise is to allow individuals wrongly recommended for deletion to raise objections to the Parish/Ward Tribunal,” Justice Byabakama explained.
The Parish/Ward Tribunal, appointed by the area Magistrate, comprises two elders and three other members appointed in consultation with political parties. They will make the final decisions on recommendations for inclusion, deletion, or correction.
Byabakama noted that complaints arising from the display exercise are to be directed to the Returning Officers of the respective Electoral Districts.
The Commission also clarified that during the initial display, lists of citizens registered and verified by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) who had not indicated their preferred polling stations were also exhibited, to facilitate polling station assignment.
After the Tribunal process, the Commission will compile the data to produce the final National Voters’ Register for the 2025/2026 General Elections. This register will be used to conduct the first cycle of elections, namely the elections of SIGs Committees, scheduled for June 2025.
