Kampala, Uganda – 17 May 2025: The Radical New Bar Vice President of the Uganda Law Society (ULS), Mr. Asiimwe Anthony, has reported that the whereabouts of their colleague, Adv. Abed Nasser Mudyobole, are presently unknown.
In a statement issued on Saturday morning, Advocate Mudyobole (inset) was forcibly disappeared by heavily armed, drone-operating security operatives on Friday at about 5:00 pm, from Gold Rock Hotel, Kyaliwajala, Kira Municipality, Wakiso district, where he had gone to meet a client.
The statement notes that preliminary inquiries with the police on the whereabouts of Nasser have also not yielded no results.
The Uganda Law Society also noted that enforced disappearances are currently a serious problem in many parts of Uganda. Political activists, human rights defenders, relatives of those already disappeared, key witnesses and lawyers seem to be particular targets.
Mudyobole is a known opposition supporter affiliated to the National Unity Platform (NUP). He has previously contested on the FDC ticket for the position of Iganga Municipality Member of Parliament, and he is planning to contest for the same constituency in 2026 on the NUP ticket.
A few days ago, another NUP supporter and bodyguard to NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Noah Mutwe was also pronounced missing. Police is yet to issue a statement about this claim.
The news of Mudyobole comes at a time when NUP is circulating pictures of their supporter, Ssebudde Kassim, who has been missing for weeks only to be found last night at Namboole. The Opposition party claims that Kassim was driven to Namboole in the dead of the night and dumped near Namboole Stadium.
It is claimed that Kassim was abducted on April 27th 2025 alongside Eddie Mutwe in Mukono District but the two separated from a day later. In a statement posted on the party website, NUP says Kassim’s story is not different from that of other victims — he was severely tortured, and upon release, ordered not to speak about his ordeal, otherwise they would kill him.
The lawyers’ body further notes that the overwhelming majority of the victims of enforced disappearances are men who are frequently tortured, or even killed, during incommunicado detention. The body warned their members to always stay alert as incidents of enforced disappearance continue. The incident follows reports that an Opposition National Unity Platform supporter,
“All Advocates are urged to stay alert, beware of your surroundings, and review your personal security plans. Report unscheduled travel to your family and colleagues. Support the ongoing efforts of the ULS Secretariat in tracing Advocate Mudyobole and other victims of enforced disappearance.” The ULS stated.
