UPDF Suspends Military ties with Germany over Envoy’s alleged involvement in rebel activities

Kampala, Sunday May 25, 2025: The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) said it has with immediate effect suspended all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany.

According to the Acting Director Defense Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, the decision is in response to credible intelligence reports that the current German Ambassador to Uganda His Excellency Mathias Schauer is actively engaged in subversive activities in the country.

The Ugandan Army -UPDF earlier issued a statement accusing Amb. Schauer for supporting opposition political groups whose elements are working to undermine the ruling National Resistance Movement which has been in power for 39 years. The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has since dismissed the claims as a sinister move by the ruling government to target its opponents ahead of the 2026 General elections.

Col Magezi said the suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo political-military forces operating in the country against the Ugandan government.

On June 5, 2025 supporters of a pressure group – The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have also announced plans to hold a demonstration at the Germany Embassy in Uganda over the same issue. The German Embassy is yet to issue a response.
