KAMPALA, UGANDA – High Court Judge David Matovu has ordered the release of lawyer Kiiza Eron’s passport, which had been withheld in connection with contempt of court charges. The decision, outlined in today’s court ruling, paves the way for Kiiza to travel abroad.
In the ruling by Justice David Matovu, court found that the applicant’s omission to furnish medical proof could not be a basis to deny him access to his passport, especially since the order for deposit did not specify reasons requiring such proof for release.
Furthermore, the court considered the respondent’s argument regarding the risk of flight but was satisfied that Kiiza had traveled using a travel document while on bail and returned to Uganda, indicating no such risk. The court also clarified that the order to deposit the passport was not punitive and was intended to ensure his appearance for the hearing and determination of his appeal.
The ruling explicitly states, “This application is hereby allowed and the applicant’s passport no AA00541257 should be released to him to enable him travel and get treatment abroad and this passport should be returned to this court as soon as the applicant returns to Uganda.”
Kiiza Eron has previously stated that the delay in the release of his passport has caused him to miss numerous opportunities. The order, dated June 25, 2025, from Justice David Matovu, marks a significant development for the lawyer.
