KAMPALA, TUESDAY 08 JULY 2025 – Uganda is set to join the rest of the world in commemorating World Population Day (WPD) on Friday, July 11, 2025, with a national event at Busaana Town Council Grounds in Kayunga District.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Promoting Population Health and Well-being through the Parish Development Model (PDM).” This theme highlights the Ugandan government’s commitment to transitioning 33% of households currently engaged in subsistence agriculture into the money economy.
The Parish Development Model is central to this transformation, serving as a mechanism for delivering services and fostering inclusive development at the grassroots level. This initiative aligns with the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV), the first of three plans aimed at achieving Uganda’s Tenfold Growth Strategy, which seeks to expand the nation’s GDP from USD 53.7 billion in FY2023/24 to USD 500 billion by 2040.
As part of the commemorations, several community-oriented activities are being held across Kayunga District. These include a Regional Leaders’ Dialogue on July 10, 2025, at Katikomu Hotel, involving 17 local governments. Community health outreaches will offer cervical cancer screening, family planning services, and health camps. Critical medical supplies, including 15 delivery beds, 5 incubators, 12 stethoscopes, 200 mama kits, and gloves, will be distributed.
Environmental conservation efforts will see the planting of 20,000 trees. Girls will receive training in making reusable sanitary pads, accompanied by the donation of 10 sewing machines.
Additionally, 21 desktop computers will be provided to selected schools, and solar systems will be installed at Kanjuki SS and Busaana SS. Water tanks are also being installed at Kangulumira UMEA P/S, Busaale P/S, and New Hope P/S. The celebrations will also feature sports and education competitions, including a bicycle race, football and netball tournaments, and a secondary school debate.
His Excellency, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, is expected to grace the event as the Guest of Honour. The President will also commission the Kayunga-Baale-Galiraya-Kasokwe Road, a significant infrastructure development aimed at improving connectivity and economic opportunities within Kayunga District.
The National Planning Authority has extended an invitation to all Ugandans to participate in the celebrations on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Busaana Town Council Grounds in Kayunga District, and to support efforts in promoting population health and development from the grassroots up.
