Kampala, Uganda – July 15, 2015 – Police have arrested the driver and conductor of a taxi (UAZ 910B) after a video showing a man dangerously seated on a wooden chair atop the moving vehicle went viral on TikTok. The incident, which police strongly condemned as a reckless act endangering road safety, took place in Nsambya.
The arrests were confirmed by SP Kananura Michael, CLO Traffic Police, in a statement released today. According to the statement, authorities utilized CCTV footage to trace the vehicle after the alarming video began circulating online. The taxi was subsequently impounded, and both the driver and conductor are currently detained at Kabalagala Police Station.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the man seen on top of the taxi is a TikTok content creator. He allegedly paid the driver and conductor UGX 20,000 to facilitate the dangerous stunt. Both individuals are facing charges of carrying a person in a dangerous manner, contrary to section 117 (1) & (2) of the Traffic & Road Safety Act (CAP. 347).
The search is ongoing for the TikToker involved, who will also face charges under the same section of the law for accepting to be carried in such a perilous fashion. All suspects are expected to be arraigned in court at an appropriate time.
SP Kananura Michael emphasized the police’s strong condemnation of such acts; “We strongly condemn such reckless acts that endanger road safety under the guise of comedy or content creation.” He urged the public to exercise responsibility and caution, reiterating, “No life should be put at risk for the sake of entertainment. Let us all prioritize safety on our roads.” Kananura stated.
