KAMPALA – 16 August 2025: Nzaire Sedrack Nowomugisha, a candidate for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Vice Chairperson for the Western Region, stated he is still in the race despite a directive by Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba requiring him to step down from the race.
This follows a social media post in which Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba who heads a pressure group -the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) indicated that Nzaire did not seek clearance from him and therefore he was going to be recalled from the race. Nzaire has been an active member of PLU right from its inception as the MK movement.
In a public statement shared on his X handle, Nowomugisha, who is also President Yoweri Museveni’s brother,
and has served as the Kiruhura Chairman for 15 years, announced; “Nzaire Sedrack Nowomugisha Kaguta is still in the Race and leading by 87% as of last evening (August 15, 2025).” He urged delegates to disregard any communication that suggests otherwise, asserting his campaign is on a path to a “SURE WIN.”
Nowomugisha said he was approved to contest by the head of the NRM Electoral Commission, Mr. Tanga Odoi, after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms. He emphasized his long-standing commitment to the party and his qualifications for the role. “I’ve served under the NRM for the last 15yrs as the Kiruhura Chairman, it’s upon that experience that I intend to represent the Western Region as a Game Changer, a Better Link between the Youth and our Seniors & a Voice for the Voiceless,” he said.
Nzaire framed his platform around experience and a deep understanding of the party’s grassroots challenges. He claimed that his unique perspective makes him the ideal “Game Changer” and the only one who truly knows the problems facing the lower party structures. He urged delegates to vote for him.
The NRM is yet to release an official statement regarding the status of Nowomugisha’s candidacy and it is not clear what step Gen Muhoozi will take next. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
