EC Adjusts Dates for Nominations of MPs and Presidential Campaigns

KAMPALA, UGANDA: 19 September 2025 – The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has released an updated electoral roadmap, rescheduling key activities for the upcoming 2026 general elections, including the nomination dates for Members of Parliament and campaigns for presidential candidates.

According to the press statement of September 18 2025, signed by EC Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, nomination of MPs has been brought forward and will now take place on October 23rd-24th, 2025, instead of the previously planned dates of October 15th-16th. The nomination dates for Presidential candidates however remain on 23rd-24th September 2025 followed by harmonization of candidates’ campaign programnes for presidential elections from 25th to 27th.

This change allows the commencement of presidential campaigns to begin on September 29th, 2025, running through to January 12th, 2026.

The changes according to Mr Byabakama are intended to prevent a clash with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Mid-term Review Conference, which Uganda is hosting on October 15th and 16th, 2025.
He said the adjustment was necessary to ensure full participation of government officials and key institutions in both the international conference and the electoral process.

Nominations for SIGs representatives to parliament will be conducted from 23rd to 24th October, and the official campaign period for both parliamentary candidates and those representing Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which will run from November 10th, 2025, to January 12th, 2026.

The EC has also confirmed that the polling period for all general elections, including presidential, parliamentary, and local government councils, remains unchanged and will be conducted from January 12th, 2026, to February 9th, 2026.

The Electoral Commission has advised all stakeholders to take note of the new timelines to ensure a smooth and efficient electoral process.
