KAMPALA, October 6, 2025 β The Uganda Police Force today confirmed the arrest of approximately 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) at Bujjuko trading centre, along the Mityana highway, following an incident of public unrest during presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s campaign movement.
βThe arrests were made by a joint security deployment tasked with facilitating the candidateβs travel to Mityana district for a scheduled presidential rally.
βAccording to a police statement issued this evening, Mr. Kyagulanyi had originally planned to use the Mityana highway but instead opted for the Hoima Road route. Despite the candidateβs change of itinerary, a group of NUP supporters gathered at the Bujjuko trading centre, obstructing the Mityana highway.
βPolice reported that the group engaged in disruptive activities, including “drumming, whistling, and blocking the road,” which severely disrupted the flow of traffic and “incited unrest” in the area.
βSecurity personnel at the scene issued warnings, urging the group to disperse and clear the road. However, the statement noted that the NUP supporters “persisted,” leading the security deployment to intervene and make arrests.
βApproximately 29 suspects were apprehended during the operation. They are currently being held at the Wakiso police division as investigations continue.
βIn concluding the statement, the Uganda Police Force urged political aspirants and their followers to maintain public order.
β”We urge all presidential candidates to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users,” the police statement read, emphasizing the need for peaceful and orderly campaigns during the election period.
