President Museveni Mourns Raila Odinga, Lauds His Pan-African Legacy

KAMPALA, UGANDA – October 16, 2025 – President Yoweri K. Museveni of Uganda has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on October 15, 2025.

In a signed statement, President Museveni expressed his profound sadness upon receiving the news, recognizing Mr. Odinga not just as a prominent politician, but as a dedicated “freedom fighter” in the mold of his father, Kenya’s first Vice-President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

”Rt. Hon Odinga has not been just a career politician. He has been a freedom fighter, in the tradition of his late father, Jaramogi Odinga,” the statement read.

President Museveni highlighted the shared ideological vision with both father and son, describing their orientation as “patriotic and Pan-Africanist.” He underscored their commitment to regional integration, noting that their “sentiments have been for the unity of Kenya, East Africa and Africa, including always supporting the struggles for the realization of our dream for the East African Federation.”
The Ugandan leader lamented the timing of the former Prime Minister’s death, stating, “It is, therefore, unfortunate that he has left at this moment.”

He issued a challenge to the continent’s youth, urging them to step up and continue the work of historical figures like Mr. Odinga. “It is important for the young People to fill the void left by such historical fighters for Africa’s future,” Museveni added.

President Museveni extended his deepest condolences to Kenya’s Head of State, H.E. President William Ruto, the people of Kenya, and Mr. Odinga’s family.
The tribute concluded with a prayer: “May his soul rest in eternal peace.” The statement was signed: Yoweri K. Museveni, President and Chairman of the NRM.

The passing of the former Prime Minister marks the end of an era for Kenyan and East African politics, leaving a significant gap in the region’s quest for deeper political and economic unity.
