KAMPALA UGANDA: 10 November, 2025 – Today, officially marks the commencement of Campaigns for Parliamentary and Local Government Councils Elections 2026.
According to the Electoral Commission, a total of 2,025 candidates were nominated to contest for the 353 constituencies for Directly-elected Member of Parliament, while 640 candidates were nominated to contest for the 146 positions for the District/City Woman Representative to Parliament.
On the other hand, a total of 521 candidates were successfully nominated to contest for the 146 positions for City/District Chairperson. In total, 83,597 candidates are campaigning for the 45,505 elective positions in this general election, that is, from President to Sub County Councillor.
In a statement, the Electoral Commission called on political parties, candidates including independent candidates, agents of candidates, supporters and the general public to follow the EC election guidelines. EC Deputy Spokesperson, Paul Bukenya said the campaign meetings shall be held in accordance with the harmonized program which is agreed upon by all candidates in the constituency or electoral area.
Bukenya noted that the harmonized campaign programs were endorsed by the respective returning officers, shared with security for purposes of ensuring a secure environment and orderly campaign exercise.
“Campaigns shall only be conducted between the stipulated time; from 7AM until 6PM on each of the polling days, and we call on the candidates, their agents and supporters to ensure that campaign meetings do not go beyond 6PM. Equally important, we urge candidates and agents not to use defamatory language that may incite public disorder, hatred or violence.” Bukenya noted.
