IGANGA, Uganda, 28 November 2025 — Uganda Police force (UPF) confirmed that one person died while three (3) others were injured in the violence that erupted as the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi campaigned in Iganga District on November 28, 2025.

In a statement, police identified the victim as Misaki Okello stating that he was killed during the dispersal of “unruly crowds” as Kyagulanyi combed Busoga subregion for votes. The UPF claims that security forces  deployed to maintain order were “faced [with] attacks, including stone-throwing incited by the candidate.”

In a video circulating on social media, security operatives clad in army uniform are seen disembarking from a military lorry and firing at crowds using rifles.

“The attacks resulted in serious injuries to officers and damage to several police vehicles.”  the press statement reads in part. Police condemned the “hooliganism” and warned of decisive action against those confronting armed officers.

Of recent, clashes and violence have become a common feature at opposition National Unity Platform rallies, with security unleashing different weapons including firing teargas canisters, pepper spray, water canons and K9 dogs to disperse crowds of supporters. Security claims Kyagulanyi and his supporters do not follow electoral guidelines.

In response, the NUP candidate Kyagulanyi claims that the security operatives “fired live bullets at peaceful people” who were exiting the rally venue. He explicitly stated that the party has “confirmed the murder in cold blood of Meshach Okello, who was shot through the head,” directly accusing the security forces of the unlawful killing.
