ENTEBBE, UGANDA: 02 December 2025 -The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in partnership with the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), is hosting a crucial three-day workshop focused on the future of global air navigation.
The ICAO-CANSO System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) and Flight & Flow Information for a Collaborative Environment (FF-ICE) Workshop is taking place from December 2–4, 2025, at the Protea Hotel in Entebbe, Uganda.
Commitment to Modernizing Air Navigation
The event was officially opened by UCAA Deputy Director General, Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, who highlighted Uganda’s active role in modernizing its Air Navigation Services (ANS).
“Uganda is making continued progress in digital aeronautical information exchange, MET data modernization, and the implementation of electronic Terrain and Obstacle Data (eTOD),” Ms. Lumonya stated, underscoring the country’s commitment to advancing the digital transformation of its airspace management.
Representing the ICAO Regional Director for the Eastern and Southern African (ESAF) region, Ms. Kezia Ogutu emphasized the indispensable role of collaboration and capacity building in adopting these complex systems.
“The importance of partnership cannot be overstated,” Ms. Ogutu remarked. “There is a strong need for capacity building to prepare States for what is expected of them. This calls for working together, strengthening collaboration, and putting in place the proper structures.”
A Pan-African Collaborative Effort
The workshop serves as a vital platform, bringing together aviation representatives from 15 States across the continent and beyond, including:
Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde,Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, United States of America, and Zambia.
Over the three days, participants are delving into how the implementation of SWIM and FF-ICE can significantly enhance continental information sharing, improve interoperability, and accelerate the essential transition toward trajectory-based operations.
UCAA concluded by extending its appreciation to ICAO and CANSO for their continued partnership and to all delegates for their commitment to advancing the future of air navigation in Africa.
