BUGIRI DISTRICT, UGANDA: 10 December 2025 – Ten people were killed instantly and three others sustained injuries in a horrific road accident this morning in Bugiri District. The fatal crash, which occurred around 7:00 am at Busowa Town Council along the busy Busia Highway, involved a passenger van and a stationary trailer.
The collision claimed the lives of all ten deceased, including the driver, who were occupants of the ill-fated Toyota Hiace van, registration number UBN 817H. The van collided with a stationary trailer, registration number UA 647BA/UA 430AA.
According to a press statement released by SP Kananura Michael, the Chief Licensing Officer (CLO) for the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, preliminary investigations suggest the crash was caused by reckless road behavior.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace reportedly attempted an unsafe overtaking maneuver of an unidentified vehicle. Upon seeing another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction, the driver swerved sharply to the left to avoid a head-on collision. The driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the stationary trailer.
”The impact killed ten people on the spot, including the driver, and left three others with injuries,” the statement confirmed.
Traffic and Road Safety personnel responded quickly to the scene. The three survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same hospital mortuary.
Police have commenced a full investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
In light of the tragic event, the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety issued a stern caution to all motorists.
”We urge all motorists to desist from reckless road behavior, including speeding and unsafe overtaking, which continue to be major causes of crashes on our roads,” said SP Kananura Michael. “Drivers are reminded to exercise maximum caution and prioritise safety at all times.”
The accident adds to the worrying statistics of fatal road crashes in the country, often linked to driver error and disregard for traffic regulations.
