Tragedy on Masaka-Mbarara Highway: Family of Seven Perished in Head-On Collision

LWENGO DISTRICT, 27 December 2025– A cloud of grief has settled over a local community following a horrific road traffic crash that claimed the lives of seven family members in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on December 27, 2025, at Njagalakasayi along the busy Masaka–Mbarara Highway.

Details of the Crash

According to Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Uganda Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the collision involved two vehicles:

A Toyota Fielder (Registration: UBH 476W) and, A Fuso Fighter truck (Registration: UBP 510V).

Preliminary police investigations suggest the tragedy was caused by an attempted overtaking maneuver. The driver of the Toyota Fielder, heading from the Masaka direction, reportedly tried to overtake a queue of vehicles. In the process, the Fielder crashed head-on into the oncoming Fuso truck.

A Family Wiped Out

The impact of the crash was devastating. All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died instantly at the scene. Police have identified the victims as members of a single family, including: The driver (a man),  His wife, their four children, and the man’s brother.

Following the incident, SP Michael Kananura issued a stern warning to the public regarding road safety during the festive season.

”We urge all motorists to avoid reckless overtaking, especially at night when visibility is poor,” Kananura stated. “Drivers are further advised to limit night travel where possible and ensure they are well-rested to prevent fatigue-related crashes.”

The wreckage of the vehicles was cleared from the highway as investigations continue. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of high-speed maneuvers and the risks associated with long-distance travel under low-visibility conditions.
