Tragic Valentine’s Day Attack: Panga-wielding Assailants leave Couple Dead in Kyankwanzi

KYANKWANZI DISTRICT: 14 February 2026– A cloud of grief has settled over Kizungu Cell in Ntunda Town Council following a brutal double murder that occurred in the early hours of Valentine’s Day.

According to a statement released by SSP Lameck Kigozi, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Wamala Region, a local peasant identified as Sentongo Awali (42) and his wife, Ayebare Doreen, were hacked to death by unidentified assailants at approximately 2:30 AM on Saturday.

The police report indicates that “bad-hearted” individuals raided the couple’s home under the cover of darkness. The attackers are believed to have been armed with sharp objects, likely pangas (machetes), which they used to inflict fatal wounds.

Sentongo Awali: Sustained multiple cuts to the head and a fatal stab wound to the neck. He reportedly died instantly at the scene.

Ayebare Doreen: Was stabbed in the ribs during the struggle. In a desperate attempt to save her life, she tried to flee toward her relatives’ home—located just 80 meters away—but collapsed and succumbed to her injuries before she could reach help.

Amidst the horror, two young children who were inside the house at the time of the attack were spared. The eldest, a four-year-old, survived the ordeal physically unharmed, though the psychological impact remains a concern for the community.

Police Response and Investigation

The District Police Commander (DPC) of Kyankwanzi was alerted to the crime by a neighbor, Mulawa Ashiraf, early Saturday morning. A team, including a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), was immediately dispatched to secure the area and begin forensic documentation.

As of now, the motive behind the killings remains unknown, and the suspects are still at large.

”We appeal to our people in Ntunda Town Council who are still in grief and fear to stay calm and also cooperate with security in investigations,” stated SSP Kigozi.

The Wamala Region police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to come forward. Authorities have guaranteed that any shared information will be handled with the “greatest confidentiality.”
