KAMPALA, UGANDA: 09 March 2026– The Chief Justice of Uganda, Dr. Flavian Zeija, has officially re-appointed Hon. Mr. Justice Stephen Musota (JSC) as the Chief Inspector of Courts. The statement, released by Judiciary on March 9, 2026, confirms that Justice Musota will serve another three-year term, backdated to take effect from January 25, 2026.
According to the statement, the reappointment was made in accordance with several legal provisions, including: Article 133(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda,Section 8(2), (3), and (4) of the Administration of the Judiciary Act, 2020, and Paragraph 8 of the Administration of the Judiciary (Inspectorate of Courts) Regulations, 2023.
This marks the second time Justice Musota has been chosen for the role, having initially been appointed on January 27, 2023. The Judiciary statement noted that his continued service is a reflection of the “confidence in his leadership and stewardship” demonstrated during his first tenure.
Role and Responsibility
As the Chief Inspector of Courts, Justice Musota is tasked with overseeing the Inspectorate of Courts. This body is critical to the judicial system, serving as a watchdog to ensure: Accountability and Integrity through Promoting high ethical standards among judicial officers.
Discipline: Monitoring the conduct of court staff across all levels, and Performance Standards: Ensuring that courts operate efficiently and meet set benchmarks.
The Judiciary highlighted that through the work of the Inspectorate, it aims to advance ongoing reforms centered on making the justice system more transparent, responsive, and efficient for all Ugandans.
