KAMPALA, UGANDA: 24 March 2026– The Registered Trustees of the Church of Uganda have been officially reinstated as the rightful owners of prime land located along Port Bell Road, following a successful intervention by the Inspectorate of Government (IG).
The recovery comes after a detailed investigation into allegations of high-level land fraud involving the property, designated as Plot 107, Old Port Bell Road.
Fraudulent Transfer Exposed
According to a press statement issued by the Inspectorate on March 25, 2026, investigations revealed that the Land Registration Department had fraudulently issued a special certificate of title for the property. This title was subsequently transferred to businessman Meddie Mayega Nyago, despite the fact that the original title remained in the secure custody of the Church’s Trustees.
The fraudulent certificate was issued on October 28, 2022. Upon confirming the illegality of the transaction, the Inspector General of Government (IGG) ordered the Commissioner of Land Registration to cancel the fraudulent instrument.
Reinstatement on National Record
Official records now reflect the correction. A search report dated March 9, 2026, confirmed that the Registered Trustees of the Church of Uganda have been fully reinstated as the lawful owners on the National Land Information System (NLIS).
The Inspectorate described the move as a demonstration of their commitment to transparency and the rule of law within public offices.
”This investigation demonstrates the IG’s bold commitment to enforce the rule of law, transparency and accountability in public offices for better service delivery,” the statement read.
