KAMPALA UGANDA: 08 April 2026– Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson currently held at Luzira Upper Prison, has issued a heart-wrenching appeal to the Chief Justice of Uganda for temporary release following the death of his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro.

The request, dated April 8, 2026, comes at a time of profound personal tragedy for the incarcerated politician, whose wife recently succumbed to a long battle with cancer.

A Final Wish for a Final Act of Love

In a formal letter addressed to the Honorable Chief Justice and routed through prison authorities, Mufumbiro detailed the emotional weight of his situation. He noted that in her final days, Edith expressed a “last and most earnest wish” that her husband be by her side and permitted to lay her to rest.

”I approach Your Lordship not as a man who disregards the law,” Mufumbiro wrote, “but as a man who is taking the law in its most human and dignified expression to permit me one final act of love for my wife.”

Mufumbiro has been on remand since September 8, 2025. He currently faces two separate sets of charges:

Criminal Case No. 1363 of 2025: Unlawful drilling, and Criminal Case No. 147 of 2026: Incitement to commit an offense.

Despite previous unsuccessful bail applications, Mufumbiro is scheduled to appear in court on April 10, 2026, for bail rulings on both cases. He has expressed a full willingness to abide by any release conditions set by the court.

Funeral Arrangements Announced

The family has released a tentative burial program for Edith Katende Mufumbiro, spanning four days of services and memorials:

*On Wednesday April 8, a vigil at Makandwa Village (6:00pm).

*On Thursday April 9, A requiem mass at Namirembe Cathedral (10:00am).

*On Friday April 10, A Church service at Luzita Church of Uganda(11.00am).

*On Saturday April 11, Burial at Busiro Village, Luuka(4:00pm).

A Plea for Compassion

The timing of the burial coincides closely with Mufumbiro’s scheduled court appearance this Friday. The appeal to the Chief Justice seeks to bypass the standard judicial delays to ensure he can attend the final funeral service on Saturday in Busiro.

The letter has been copied to several high-ranking officials, including the Principal Judge, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the Chief Magistrate of Kawempe, signaling the urgency and high-profile nature of the request.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the judiciary had not yet issued a formal response to the appeal for temporary release on humanitarian grounds.
