The government of Japan through the Ministry of Finance has issued a grant worth $24 million about 88 billion shillings to Kampala Capital City Authority to facilitate measures to decongest Kampala City.
In an a Grant Aid agreement signed today in Kampala, the funds will facilitate construction of a state-of-art traffic control center, several road junctions, and install traffic lights at several junctions in the city.
The event was graced by the Minister for Finance Hon. Matia Kasaija, KCCA Executive Director Eng. Andrew Kitaka, Japan’s Ambassador in Uganda, and representatives of JICA in Uganda.
According to ED KCCA Eng. Andrew Kitaka, the funds will be used to construct a traffic control center at City Hall from which traffic in all junctions will be controlled.
Speaking after the agreement signing ceremony, Eng. Kitaka said part of the funding will be used to install traffic lights at 30 more junctions in the city as a means to improve traffic flow in the city.
Eng. Kitaka thanked Amb. Kazuaki Kameda and the government of Japan, noting that under his stewardship big projects like the Jinja Nile Bridge and Kampala Flyover project have been possible among others.
Hon. Matia Kasaija noted that government working with KCCA is planning to introduce big buses to take over transport service in the city. He said these will replace 14-seaters since they carry more people as a means to mitigate traffic convention in Kampala City.
