Uganda Certificate of Education examination (UCE) results for the year 2020 show that there was better performance overall compared to 2019, according to UNEB Executive Secretary Mr Dan Odong.
According to the UCE results for 2020 released today, 311,233 (4,309 more) candidates passed exams compared to 306,924 who passed in 2019. The results were officially released by Education Minister Hon Janet Kataha Museveni during an event at State House Nakasero in Kampala.
The released results for the year 2020 show that females outperformed the males in English but the males performed better in the rest of the subjects.
However, nearly half of the candidates did not achieve the minimum pass level of 8 in sciences. The number of male candidates who registered is 166,744 (50.01%), and that of females is 166,652 (49.99%).
This is also a decrease of 2,468 (-0.7%) candidates who appeared for exams (165,251 males and 165,341 females) appeared compared to 333,060 candidates who appeared for the examination in 2019.
A total of 1,292 results will however be withheld due to alleged exam malpractice and in accordance with Section 5 (2) (b) of the UNEB Act No 1 of 2021. This number was 1,825 in 2019.
According to Mr Odong, the examination centres from which results are withheld will be notified through their portals and the affected students given a fair hearing.
Mr Odong said due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation, no hard copy result lists will be issued from UNEB offices until conditions are more favourable. Examination centres will be notified accordingly.
“Candidates, their parents, guardians and any other person wishing to access results may do so through their mobile phones; Go to the ‘Message’ menu and type UCE, leave space, then type the correct index number of the candidate; e.g. U0000/001. Heads of UCE examination Centres can also download the results from UNEB portals as soon as they are released.” he said.
Dan Odongo warned headteachers about conmen calling them, saying they should pay money if they don’t want their #UCE2020 results withheld.
UNEB also warned schools against gathering students to celebrate the results owing to the risk of spreading the deadly coronavirus.
“We warn all schools against gathering the candidates in the school premises or anywhere else to celebrate the results as this act is likely to spread COVID-19 infection.” – Dan Odongo said.
