A police officer and two civilians are among the victims of the twin bomb attacks in Uganda’s capital on Tuesday that left 6 people dead and 37 injured -police said.
Police confirmed that Constable Kungu Amos attached to Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) as a victim of the terrorist attack at CPS together with Basibe Ismail who died on spot after the attack. Christopher Sande is the third victim having died in the second blast along Parliament Avenue.
In a statement, police said the identities of the dead were revealed after joint Counter Terrorism teams completed documenting evidence from inner perimeters at the two blast sites.
Police says, the teams have finished sweeping buildings sorrounding the blast sites and other vital installations for secondary devices using canine dogs and DNA samples from the site have been analyzed.
“No secondary devices were found and the buildings have been cleared for resumption of activities.” the statement reads in part.
“We have in addition identified the relatives of the 37 injured persons out of whom 27 are police officers and 10 civilians. So far, 19 police officers and 5 civilians have been discharged. Only 13 victims remain admitted but progressing well” the statement adds.
Police also reminded Ugandans that the threat of the attacks “is real and from a known enemy” -the Allied Democratic Force ADF despite earlier claims by Islamic State IS who allegedly said they were responsible for the bomb attacks.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, police confirmed that the attacks were of domestic actors. It was also stated that it was a suicide attack in which 3 other the victims who perished were terrorists. Later, media reports quoted IS claiming responsibility for the attacks via Telegram accounts.
