President Yoweri Museveni has said he is delighted with the results which his social-economic transformation agenda for Uganda has caused in communities around the country, with more and more people improving their livelihoods through commercial farming.
The president made the remarks after completing Day-One of his tour of Sebei subregion to assess the progress of Parish Development Model (PDM) program, whose main objective is to elevate as many poor Ugandans as possible, into the money economy.
“I am glad to see that people are beginning to wake up. Everywhere I go, I notice progress. This reminds me of where we were back in 1986. When I first visited the Sebei sub-region, I saw that people were hardworking, but they were working without Ekibaro (calculation)” President Museveni posted on X on Tuesday evening.
Mr Museveni noted that he visited a one Nicholas Chelimo, a model farmer in Bukwo District, whose thriving enterprise on exactly four acres includes banana farming, coffee, maize production, local poultry farming, and dairy.
He also visited Agogo Akisa Lovisa, in Kween District, a PDM beneficiary, and was happy to see her rebuilding her life despite the challenges posed by insecurity in the past.
“She shared her story of resilience, having lost twelve cows and goats to Karamojong raids, as well as her husband’s tragic death. I salute her determination to raise her children amidst these hardships.” He noted.
Before the tour of Sebei sub-region, Museveni toured Bukedi sub-region, Greater Kibaale, Teso and Karamoja sub-regions. His comments today, seem to illustrate that the president is impressed with what he has witnessed in the areas he has so far covered. Wherever he goes, the Head of State teaches locals how to create wealth, practically illustrates how best they can do it, and at times donates capital or equipment to facilitate the farming projects of locals.
“My final visit today was to my granddaughter, Mrs. Doreen Yapsiwa’s home in Kapchorwa District. I was very happy to see that she has woken up and is engaged in wealth creation. She acquired a cow using PDM money, along with the 400,000 shillings she added for purchasing it. Before that, she had a banana plantation and 500 coffee trees on one acre—now that is very good.” Museveni adds.
The president will address the leaders of Sebei sub-region tomorrow.
