Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has today issued a release order to the Chief of Defence Forces, directing the immediate release of Edward Rogers Ssebuufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe.
The order, dated May 2nd, 2025, and signed by the Chairperson of the UHRC, Hon. Mariam Wangadya, states that the Commission is satisfied that Mr. Ssebuufu has been unlawfully detained or restricted since April 26th, 2025.
The release order, issued under Article 53(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and Rule 31 of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (Procedure) Rules, was addressed to the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs at Mbuya, Kampala.
The UHRC warned that failure to comply with the directive could lead to liability for contempt of court under Article 53(1)(d) of the Constitution.
Eddie Mutwe, a prominent figure, was reportedly taken into custody on April 26th, 2025. The reasons for his detention have not been officially disclosed. This order from the UHRC marks a significant intervention by the human rights body, emphasizing its constitutional mandate to protect individual liberties and address unlawful detention.
The directive now puts pressure on the Chief of Defence Forces to respond and ensure the immediate release of Mr. Ssebuufu. The public and human rights observers will be keenly watching the developments following this order.
