Kenya has recorded 80 new Covid-19 cases; the highest in a single day.
The national tally now stands at 1,109, the Health ministry announced today.
During the daily coronavirus briefing, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi said 41 of the new cases were recorded in Nairobi, 20 in Mombasa, seven in Siaya, six in Kwale after testing 3,102 samples.
The case in Siaya came as a result of a person who aquired a forged document from Kibera, Nairobi which is currently under lockdown and ferried mourners who were positive for a burial in Siaya. Mutahi says it is unfortunate that Kenyans are not adhering to set guidelines.
He said a six-month-old baby is among the new patients found in the last 24 hours.
Mr Kagwe said nine more people were discharged after testing negative for Covid-19, raising the country’s total number of recoveries to 375.
The Covid-19 death tally remains 50, the Mutahi said.
Over the past two weeks Mutahi says the Kenyan government has increased its testing capacity by more than 40 percent which he attributed to the rising cases in the country.
He however cautioned Kenyans to adhere to set guidelines to avoid a re-enforcement of earlier restrictions as it has been the case in countries that have experienced a re-emergence of COVID-19, after they had successfully contained the virus.
“This war cannot be fought and won by government alone..it can be won by individuals in houses, on streets, in markets and everyone” CS Mutahi said.
