Kampala, Uganda – Seventeen (17) students of Kyambogo University have been suspended indefinitely following their involvement in a demonstration last week against a controversial Shs50,000 surcharge on late tuition registration.

According to a notice issued by the university administration on April 29th, 2025, the suspended students involved in actions “that disrupted university operations on Wednesday, April 23, 2025”

The suspended students, along with their programmes, are: Owor John Masanja (Bachelor of Economics and Statistics -Faculty of Social Sciences), Mwesigwa Timothy (Bachelor of Development Studies Faculty of Social Sciences), Kiptoo Ian Cheywa (Bachelor of Vocational Studies in Agriculture with Education – Faculty of Agriculture), Akiso Benjamin (Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting -Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation), Avaye Nickson (Bachelor of Science in Building Economics -School of Built Environment), Washitwaya Joel Vincent (Bachelor of Science Technology- Chemistry, Biology -Faculty of Science), Nansenja Winnie (Bachelor of Demography and Reproductive Health – Faculty of Social Sciences), Moro Alfred (Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences -Faculty of Social Sciences), Kajubi Maktum (Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice – Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation), Murozi Abel (Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering and Management – Faculty of Engineering), Namanya Bashaija Hillary (Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Building Engineering -Faculty of Engineering), Muguluma Wahab (Bachelor of Science in Textile and Clothing Technology -Faculty of Engineering), Muganzi Assaph (Bachelor of Science in Building Economics – Faculty of Engineering), Okeilo Emmanuel (Bachelor of Arts with Education -School of Education), Kiwumulo Paul (Bachelor of Arts with Education -School of Education), Kabumbi Evalyn (Bachelor of Vocational Studies in Agriculture with Education – Faculty of Agriculture), Kayemba Muhammed (Bachelor of Engineering in Automotive and Power Engineering -Faculty of Engineering).

10 students including their Guild President, Akiso Benjamin, were on 28th April 2025 remanded to Luzira Prison for the protests till 29th April 2025, following the protest against the surcharge policy. They were released on bail this morning, April 29, 2025, by the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court. In the latest communication, the suspension was sanctioned by the Kyambogo University administration led by Vice Chancellor, Eli Katunguka.

Citing Regulation 40 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations, the administration stated that the listed students participated in an unauthorized protest that led to the disruption of normal university activities. The suspension took effect on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, and will last for one month, pending a formal hearing before the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee.

The university management has further directed that while on suspension, these students should not appear on any university premises. The outcome of the formal hearing by the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee will determine any further disciplinary actions.
